Imago Services’ recycling initiative picks up top award

imago Services, the leading hospitality provider at Loughborough University, was named winner in the category of Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector at the sixth annual Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. This latest accolade comes hot on the heels of the brand picking up bronze in the Sustainable Tourism category at the Enjoy England Awards earlier in the month.

Held at London’s Landmark Hotel on 20th October, imago Services pipped butter manufacturer The Kerrygold Company and food waste treatment specialists PDM to the post to be announced the 2009 winner.

Recognised for introducing a recycling service in the halls of residence at Loughborough University, imago Services reduced waste to landfill by 355 tonnes and, working in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council, also collected more than 1,000 bags of recyclables every fortnight from the student halls of residence. Other initiatives introduced, which drove them to win the award, included an incentive scheme for bottle recycling called ‘Bottles for Bounty’, whereby students were given 5p towards their nominated charity for every kilogram of bottles they were able to recycle, plus a food waste composting scheme which helped divert over 200kg of food waste from landfill every day.

imago Services’ Chris Steele, environmental and sustainability coordinator, and Nik Hunt, operations support manager, both attended the ceremony. Chris commented: “It was a great event with so many people from diverse business backgrounds celebrating recycling and sustainability. The award we received is testament to many people’s hard work and dedication within imago and it is great to be acknowledged as one of the industry’s shining examples of a sustainable business.”

Organised by letsrecycle.com, the Awards for Excellence are renowned for showcasing innovation, dedication and success in recycling and sustainable waste management. Hosted by television personality and news reader Dermot Murnaghan; the event was supported by Defra's Waste Implementation Programme, the Environment Agency, the Environmental Services Association and the National Association of Waste Disposal Authorities.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: "This year we were looking for people who have built on the efforts that they have done and not just those with high recycling rates. And, I think you can see from the winners that this has been reflected."
